The pinion should be picked according to the motor and spur not just the model of car.
With my X6 I use a 24 to 26 pinion on a 10.5t motor and a 22t to 24t pinion on an 8.5t motor. I have an 18t pinion on the 5.5t motor in my B4 (similar to X6) so that's a good starting point for the X6.
