Best check your local clubs to see what they race, and what tickles your fancy. You can race most classes with an outlay of £250

1/10 TC is cheap and gives you close racing. GT12 is also similar in price but less popular.

For offroad you can get good rtr brushless cars (The madrat is good, especially as its popular so there will be lots of advice on forums etc)

The big thing is finding a club you like, then getting the set-up that will let you race there.
