I've been using the FrSky receivers with my Futaba Fasst stuff as well...I've actually opened them up and removed one of the antenna's so it's just got the one....not only that, but I've wound up the one remaining antenna and have it so that only the end 30mm or so sticks out of the case...still works perfectly!!!
Opening them up is a little fiddly, the plastic is only thin, so just be careful when you do it and you'l be fine!
Been using them at 10th Nationals, and micro nationals without a single issue.
As for other brands, 2.4Ghz is different to 40/27mhz....you need to match up manufacturers/systems for Tx & Rx as each manufacturer uses subtly different methods for doing the 2.4 thing, stopping you from linking other brands of receiver. The FrSky stuff is the only exception to that that I know of.
