We have certainly not found it to be an issue at Caldicot, and the club has been running weekly for over 20 years!...it's all personal choice at the end of the day.
For me at least, it's club racing, and is not about the sharp end as such! Racing at the sharp end is doing your regionals, nationals and one off big events...that's where you really invest in your racing as that's where it means the most.
Club racing is week in week out, the racers know the score, they know who the quick ones really are, the ones they can compete with and who they can't, and who they are aiming for in the long term. And everyone manages their own costs according to what they can afford.
I suspect having some people on new and some people on old tyres each week just adds to the variety for those who are competing within themselves, and that probably just keeps it interesting...at the end of the day it's toy cars and hanging out with your mates and should just be all good fun and good practice...leave the rules and regulations for the big competitions!!
Just my opinion of course, but we've always kept our club racing as relaxed as possible, and don't even run club championships as it just starts arguments about rules and regulations! We do however run occasional one off race series to add different classes...vintage and trucks for example...and leave the big classes...2wd, 4wd & micro's to have their big comps outside club time....there are so many choices for competitions these days it seems daft to add to that party too much!
The club is now as popular as it's ever been and we don't see our setup changing any time soon
