+1 for that method. I was using the other ones like acetone and really I find them a hassle in the longer term.
For some old yz10 rims and tyres I used a sharp pair of scissors (e.g. Ones for lexan) and basically cut through the tyres. Then "peeled" off the tyres with brute force and cleaned up the remnants.
It does take longer but I personally cont be doing with fumes and chemicals now!
