Sounds to me like you have missed a component or two when u rebuilt it.
There has to be enough spacer shims, components etc to be able to compress enough between the pin holding the rear slipper plate and the nut at the front. It only takes missing one of these components ie a shim or a spacer about 1mm thick and u will get what u are describing.
I'd take the layshaft back out of the car and check your components thoroughly with an exploded diagram(this is still on Losi website I think)

Then tighten the spur and check u are getting good resistance before u put back in the car as its not a quick in and out job on a xx4!!!
