We pick our cars and pay our bills. I have chosen to drive a car which I expect to cost me lots in fuel, tax and insurance, but I love the car. OK, I do moan about the escalating costs as it is wrong, and my large carbon footprint is not bothering me. But if I was ever in a position where I had to reduce my cost of living (e.g. loose my job, become a dad, bought a house etc), then id be buying a diesel of some sort, perhaps a Golf TDI50. if it bothered me more, a none-turbo small hatch diesel.
But I wouldn't be attempting to run it on cheaper fuel, personally. The cost of a repair bill, and the cost/hassle of me not getting to somewhere and hiring a car would then outweigh the reason for me downgrading if I ever was to do so.

man after my own heart
my cars got a 90 litre tank & with super over £1.05 at the mo its a bit of kick in the bollocks every time i fill up! worst thing is i know i'll be back there in about 300 miles
i like having a big car with a big engine fully loaded with all the toys etc but its starting to get ridiculous now! it certainly puts a few quid onto the cost of every meeting
