Thanks Mark, I realise that you need to drop the pinion size if you drop the spur. That's why I fitted a 20T pinion rather than my normal 22/23 with a 6.5T motor. However, this of course compounds the issue in that you need even more rearward movement to mesh.
I think I'll try the 83 next as others have done so.
