44 front wheels won't fit as the offset is totally wrong.
The advantages are that the bearings are in the hub, so no chance of loosing them when changing wheels. They are a bit better protected from the elements so should last longer, you can use the same wheelnuts and nut driver for all four wheels. On the rear the pins are captive in the hex so you can use the stronger solid pins and not worry about them falling out when you change wheels
