Ermm why? The idler gears going have nothing to do with gearing usually, it is more down to the slipper clutch overheating. Best practice would be to buy the newer acetal or nylon idler gears to be safe.
When you are gearing up go up a tooth at a time and check the motor is not getting too hot after a normal length run.
