It depends what you want to get out of it, if you're happy to put some masking on, cut it out with a scalpel and make some shapes to paint through and just do some simple colours then you'll be fine. If you can spray flat colours that's good, you can easily do yourself a 3 or 4 colour design, next time you do it you've improved so you put some fades on it, then the time after that you put some shadows on it.

The thing to ask yourself is how much are you going to spend altogether for what you need, airbrush, air hose, masking film or Liquid Mask, scalpel, blades and however many colours you feel like buying. If you're not too worried about the money on that you need to ask yourself if you're going to get bored of it or stick at it ?

Compare that to what you'll spend on having them done for you by a pro painter and if you've comfortable spending between £20 and £50 per shell however many times you need a new shell per year it might be better to just get them done by a pro, plenty on here to choose from too.
