You tighten the diff so that you can barely turn the diff gear by hand with the two diff halves held by wrenches or something. Then just put a drop of CA glue on the hole which the diff screw is inserted into. That should give you a vary smooth and long lasting diff.
Re. Shimming, you should shim it so that there's no play betwin the crown gear and pinion, but there's no binding either.
