That could be a big part of the problem, i used to run a sensorless Mamba Max esc with a sensored 6.5t losi motor and for me it was pretty hard to control/get used to and was often told when out racing that my esc/motor setup wasnt ideal so in the end i went for a sensored combo which made a BIG difference........!!!

I agree with other comments on the 2wd and 4wd side of things as in i think that 2wd is more fun to drive and more rewarding when you get it right and finish well in a race where as 4wd is still fun but is also more intense.........!!!

Try before you buy if you can but the choice is yours, either way its still fun
