I'm struggling to see how that can happen if you are holding the spur gear preventing it from rotating, then turning one wheel by hand...
if the diff was not right, you'd probably see a poor / rough counter rotation, or nothing at all.
Other than that, you'd have to have locked the two outdrives together somehow, without applying pressure to the diff balls.. This would mean you would have no drive either...
