Depends - if it's the wife, pretty quickly (if you know what's good for you); if it's a close friend, depends on if you find it important; if it's a not so close friend, when you feel like getting around to it; and if it's some internet stalker or somebody hassling you, you put them on ignore.
(reminds me of these people that text you and expect an instant response, and I tell them "if it's that damn important, call me")
