If the shell has been properly prepped and the right paint used, I would hazard a guess it's been applied in too heavy coats, easy to do with rattle cans.
Anytime I'm using cans, try and 'dust' the first coat and build up slowly from there.
When backing, don't go mad either.
I've seen temp make a difference, but only in extremes. I do often pre warm a shell, but it's habit, without actually knowing if it makes a big difference.
