DEKRA in Germany rate reliability across 15m cars, and VW don't trouble their scorers. I can't find the full results on line, but the 2009 survey rated Ford and Honda cars top, with VW, Audi, BMW and Merc nowhere to write home about. If everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen, it appears we wouldn't be getting much satisfaction!!
If you want the car for the image, then go ahead. If you want the car for cost of purchase and ownership, I'd shop elsewhere. HTH
