I to have a 140 bhp GTTDI pd mk4 golf.
175K on the clock and still going really well.
Fuel economy is 49mpg over 9000 miles on the trip and that's with towing when off racing with 4 up in the car.

The 170bhp is a lot less econimical which is what we all need with prices the way they are.
But it all depends what you want from the car.

Try a test drive with vw and see what you think of the 2 you mentioned.
I personally think the golf has gone down hill since the mk5 with the plasticy dash but thats my opinion.

I love my mk4, it's been no trouble since i bought it with 29k on the clock and i have spent some sort of time in it. But i wouldn't have a newer one.
My next car will be an Audi A4 Sline estate, 130bhp 6sp with all the trimmings.
Good econimy, ride and i think style.

My thoughts anyway.
