The X2c is an excellent car and is definately a lot more forgiving to drive straight out of the box than the 22.
I currently drive a Losi 22 and am getting to grips with it after much playing around with the setup - probably the best car I've owned.
Although the Losi is approx £50 more, in the long run it will probably cost less than the X2c in terms of running costs. The losi comes with 2 full sets of wheels and the kit to run either rear motor of mid motor. The losi is also incredibly tough: i'm yet to break anything on mine, despite a few nasty crashes in the 5 months I've owned it. A few guys run X2cs at my club and have all snapped their chassis (a £15 repair in itself) and the front bulkhead.
The only other thing to bear in mind with the losi is that the diff is very weak (balls are very soft and the nut has a habit of losening itself) - most drivers replace the kit balls with ceramic ones (approx £10) and the diff nut with the Associated one (£3).
The MM with ball bearings and alloy shocks is still a good way forward if your son currently runs stick packs, since the X2c and Losi only run saddles.
