I'm a big fan of Losi 22's, got one of each conifguration.
tbh i would point you towards the Mad Monkey,
It would be a lot more neutral to drive and set up... the 22 has handling characteristics that don't suit a lot of people and can be a handful with lots and lots of steering and a back end that has a thirst for new tyres to keep it tamed.
Mad Monkey parts are cheaper being a Mad Rat evolved car you already have spares in the car you run.
Your son would get all the advantages of mid motored cars and their driving style plus they really are spot on for the money, just uprate the plastic shocks and stick some bearings in and you have a good car.
One worth considering if wishing to go for a more competition bred car is the soon to be released Durango DEX210... had a go with a prototype recently and all i can say is Awesome!
