James,
I wouldn't put loads on by any means.
Basically, if you leave the gears dry they will be more efficient but will wear quicker. If you use a small amount of grease on the gears there is obviously a little drag but the gears will last longer, and to be honest off setting a little drag against replacing gears is a personal choice.
Axle grease is supplied with some kits now for this use.
