The plastics are different but the parts numbers are generally the same - so if you buy spares for an old B4 you're probably going to end up with the newer plastics anyway.
In answer to the original question, my personal opinion is that there is no need to upgrade a B4 to a B4.1. There are only a couple different setup possibilities on the rear suspension, but I don't think the B4 setup is wrong. The new transmission will work the same as the old one unless you want to run a gear diff. Arguably the older US-made B4s are better quality anyway.
