I think I have it sorted now, just need to check the battery when charging.
What I had done was connect both sets of main leads to one pack, rather than one red to one pack and on black to the other pack, then use the jumper cable between the two packs therefore creating them in a series.
Well you live and learn with these things and at least the house didn't burn down - so there is a plus point
