I've done 100s of cycles on packs without balance charging and the balance hasn't drifted at all. The only time I've seen a pack go out of balance is when the balance lead had a bad connection

It's worth checking the balance regularly with a meter or the charger, as it will be the first sign if there's a problem with the pack, but with the packs I've had balance charging hasn't been necessary at all.
