I think in off-road it doesn't really matter how heavy the car is. I mean last year most of the guys running X6's were running them well into the 1700 gram mark. It's all about getting the weight where you want it these days.

Heavy cars are easier to drive more consistently, not ultimatley quick but easier to get round and are not as affected by small bumps and ruts. Best thing to do Jez is try it. I would definatly recommend some weight in the nose though.
