When you re-build your gear box make sure you remove all of the debris out of the layshaft and diff gear, use a sharp scalpel or a toothbrush (an old one obviously, not someone elses  ) and make sure there is no plastic impacted in the gears. Clear all that excess grease out and when rebuilt you should be able to spin the gear box easily with no tight spots.
Just pout of interest how long was the grass you practicing on? And was there any dead grass wrapped around the drive shafts?

well now you mentioned grass and dead grass wrapped around the shafts This may have caused the idler to die come to think of it.
There was a little bit of grass wrapped around the shaft, and the grass was about to 2inches.
Yes, I definitely made sure I cleaned all the residual crap out the gear teeth and box with a scalpal.
