Thanks, most of the data is backed up on a seperate hard drive, so hopefully I will only end up losing what I was working on during the day.
Not sure about the unmountable boot volume. I did read somewhere about pressing the F8 key and there is an option to select "last known good" not sure about the others, though i will have a look this evening when i get in.
