Sounds like your diff was slipping, and the stress from the slipper and gears trying to rotate causes your top shaft to heat up and melt/strip the plastic idle gear, I had this last week with my tc02.

make sure the diff is not set lose and back the slipper off until your happy with the way the car responds when you push the throttle
