Doesn't the shaft, being attached to the spur gear, rotate the opposite way to the motor anyway, regardless of how it is implemented?
It's a trait I suspect all shaft-drive buggies are affected by (possibly to varying degrees); like Roger says, Front-to-Rear belt driven is the only sure way to avoid the physics that cause the "twisting" you describe.
Would probably be better to have this question in the Durango forum too...
