Forget the idlers ... far too small in mass to have a major effect over the other components listed!
It is all about the rotation of the top shaft.
External idler
anticlockwise direction;
pinion, topshaft, diff/shafts/wheels
clockwise direction;
both idler gears
4 gear internal
anticlockwise direction;
pinion, 1st idler, diff/shafts/wheels
clockwise direction;
topshaft, 2nd idler
Quite a bit of mass in the topshaft assmebly ....
