One of the main reasons insurance premiums are going up is because of the cost per claim rocketing partly due to the ambulance chaser no win no fee companies out there. The other reason is that cars these days even in a low speed shunt cost so much more to repair - multiple air bags, super soft crumple zones, etc.

Another reason some companies quote stupidly high premiums is that they don't want the business but don't want to admit it! Other companies will be cheap because they are trying to build market share.
They're often the ones that are dirt cheap one year and then expensive the next. You'd be amazed at the number of people who don't shop around so just stay with their company at renewal.
