I started driving RC cars (not racing yet) about the same time the Avante hit the shelves. It was too expensive for me so I settled with a monster beetle, but I always thought the Avante was the nicest looking RC racer ever.
A few years later, the Egress was the car to have. (Over here, the local shops mostly carried Tamiya and nothing else. Associated, Schumacher, ... were as rare as a white elephants). I wanted to try some local races but I was still not able to afford an Egress so I settled with the then brand new Manta Ray, hopped up with ball diffs and hopup shocks.
The biggest shock to the local racing community was that my cheap plastic Manta Ray absolutely destroyed the Egresses, Vanquishes and other Avante deratives on the track.
I've read an interesting theory somewhere where they say that on modern (= smooth) tracks, the Avante family would do a lot better
