I'm a science teacher myself, and I've actually been a schools H&S rep to - basically I had to fill in the accident book more than anyone else, so they made me the rep!
The problem is that kids
a ) believe they are invincible
and
b ) see all those injury-lawyer-4U ads on the tv.
Recently a pupil fell in a pothole in the pavement whilst wandering along chatting to his mates (ie wasn't looking where he was going). He was awarded £10 000, which is a large sum, especially to a 14 year old. After that the whole school started looking for 'accidents' they could sue for - its easy money!
Anyway - the official school H&S line is just don't do it. No experiment, no movement, no DT, no sport. Of course the fact that we are ordered to do these things is another matter......
