Problem solved.
It turned out my allen key driver was slightly loose resulting in reduced torque when screwing the diff tight (hence not tight enough). When I used a plain allen key I was able to tighten it several more turns so I was unable to rotate the diff by hand. I also backed off a little on the slipper spring.
Now everything is running sweet, nice acceleration without noise, wheelies with full power.
