I was pretty much in the same boat as you 10 yrs ago..
I was heavily into RC cars did nationals even got a cool little sponsor with Maxtec.. But then had to weigh up either, do my degree or work a 9-5 to support the rc cars. I chose degree and was the best move I ever made.
I am only now getting back into RC cars again,
I'd say just be realistic is all.
