As Jon says - dark to light is best if poss but if not, backing a light colour with Silver can prevent a darker colour from bleeding through.

Backing colours can really affect the finished colour - especially when using flips or candies and fluoros - save the lexan off cuts from when you cut out your shell to try out things before you lay down the paint in all seriousness on the shell.
