I broke 2 xcelorin speedos and they were both replaced immediately by Horizon hobby, the UK distributer. An excellent example of a warranty/ customer service.
I don't know too much about escs, but I do now if the little switch on the transmitter is switched to reverse (accidentally) then then you get immediate full throttle
Sounds like this is what happened to you.
