To answer yr question. Shaftdriven because they like to follow the trend. Speculation though. The similarity between the yokomo beltcar and the original 501 is obvious. And the same goes for the 201 compared to B4. The differences is that Tamiya did them both better.
And plastic works. Look at the Yokomo and Lazers. So why not. Just speculation on my part but I would not be surprised if that's the case.
