Probably something to do with mating the pinion to the rear shaft on the older cars where the shaft also supported the slipper.
TBH I can see no point in this at all. As has already been said when you have quality balls in the Kyosho diffs there is nothing to beat them anyway (Kyosho ceramic in my cars now ... how nice are they!!). Before people jump on the maintenance bandwagon I re do my Kyosho diffs maybe twice a season and often find I can reuse all but the thrust washers!!!
