yeah it can be done easily without a lathe i used a sharp stanly knife and a drill i then put a bolt though the middle of each diff half and spun the lip that needs to be removed down i done them in about 30 mins. as for better than a ball diff lack of maintance yes a good well maintained ball diff is easily as comparible stength wise the ball diff wins every time i striped my rear spec r diff on its second outing came off a big jump quite hard and stipprd it.
