pre focus is the best bet, Ive had some great photos from pre focusing, it can be a bit frustrating but you can really get great shots when you time it properly.
you were taking photos where ive been at bury, along the straight, thats a really good place to get close up shots when they are in the air. I would always pre focus for those like.
