I think the main use was in the front to slow the shocks on rebound to help stop the nose lifting on acceleration.

That was the original intention (I remember trying these with Richard Weatherley when he was developing the Pred in his back garden...), and to copy how road car dampers are set-up where there is more rebound to control the spring recoil force.
