I have to say the suggestion of dropping cv's into shops is not really the greatest. Although some small companies do recruit this way most bigger names do not.
I recruit for a group of 15 shops and like the other companies that are on the high street we no longer accept any paper applications.
The best solution is to apply online to all the high street names, at this time of year there are a lot of people applying for work that are leaving school, university and the like and to be honest i have around 20 applications per post that i have a available. To give some insight we are employing graduates as cashiers who are being paid minimum wage.
Also at 16 despite the age discrimination act means that you are not able to work all of the hours and shift patterns without a risk assessment. Also some roles require handling customer data that at your age would mean that you could not be employed.
As i say apply online, apply for everything and when offered an interview arrive early and well presented. Also prepare at least 3 questions about the company you are applying for as well as researching what the role actually entails.
When i recruited at sainsburys i had a number of youngsters apply for the role and i will quote some of the remarks that were made to me.

Whatever job you find remember in retail there is always opurtunity for progression, i started out as a part time assistant earning £2.25 an hour with 3 years of hard graft i was the area manager for north and west london
