If I'm not mistaken, the grease on the outside of the ring is just to help it stick there while you assemble the halves. Nothing more. I might be wrong though...

I disagree with the advice given regaring diff ball types. Touring cars are a hell of a lot harder on diffs/transmission with massive power going through them. An off road car is protected by a slipper, if it is set up right the diff should never slip, plus they dont have as much power because of the limited grip.
I think your diff balls will work a treat, just stick with the kit greases, they are in the kit for a reason.
