The exponential doesn't slow down the steering response or numb anything. If you move instantly to full lock, you will still get full lock on the car as fast as the servo can move. Exp has zero effect in this situation.
What a negative exp does is give you less initial servo movement for a given amount of transmitter movement. This will make the car feel less twitchy in a straight line when you are correcting small movements.
