Consider that plastic parts only become cost effective once a volume target is met. This is why lots of the cars out there have common components from older models in a manufacturers range.
I don't believe any real pictures of the s1 have appeared yet, so the actual appearance of the shocks is only speculation.

What Wayne says is spot on, any "alternative spec" part (including plastic shocks) would ONLY be chaeper of thery already have it tooled up from previuos use, if it needed a new tool making it would not be any cheper for them.
Schumacher have confirmed to those of us who have spoke to them that the S1 will use the "old" style shocks that are used on current models like their nitro recreational vehicles
