Thanks for further comments / pictures, it's much clearer to me now how the individual items connect up.

I don't have an old ESC, remember this kit was last used in a Hornet in the mid 80's - just had a manual fwd/rev speed controller! Would you still need a Lipo Safe / smart stop with a new ESC, such as the one that comes with the Desert Gator, or is this technology built into modern ESC's?

I still have the servos that came with my Ko Propo gear, so hadn't planned on buying new servo's if I was able to use the old transmitter / receiver - are modern servo's different / better than the older ones? I've included a pic of my receiver and one of the servo's - can anybody see any obvious problems with these, or is it just a case of making sure I can get a compatible Ko Propo plug to enable the ESC to be plugged into my receiver?

BTW, is the Gator not considered to be particularly good? I've read mostly positive reviews about the DT02 chassis, but haven't found any specific in depth reviews of the Gator.
