Learnt to drive a Leyland PD3 bus and it had no synchro on first to second so had to doube clutch makeing sure revs were spot on for a nice slick change, hill starts were always interesting as you had to go from first to second without using clutch just snatch straight in.
Have you tried rocking car whilst trying to engage first?
