Its all a commercially based scheme to get us to spend money on crap and keep the economy turning over in our consumer driven society. Some of the retail numbers are frightening - something like half of the years sales in 4 weeks.
Christmas should be abolished and replaced with a national holiday in the summer when peeps can do something with the time off other than watching rubbish telly whilst it chucks it with rain outside.

Christmas is what you make it though, isn't it. If you want to bankrupt yourself, thats up to you though, if you are stupid enough to pander to all your kids wants, thats up to you too.
As for people who go to church on Christmas Day, probably far more than attend on a regular weekly basis. I know quite a few who do, as they like to think they are 'religeous' and do their bit over Christmas.
You can't blame shops for trying, just make Christmas what you want of it.
