linux is software and if you are comparing against OSX in terms of price they're not too far apart. Snow Leopard being a pocket money £25. Sure you can download Linux for free, but I do remember SuSE and redhat being in the shops and they were more than that. Both OSX and Linux aren't supported as well as Windows is by 3rd parties. You only have to look at games today and you see "Games for windows" or something of the like along the top.
If you are comparing hardware then I think it's very much down to the individual. If you want a unibody laptop with a gorgeous screen... (goes into lines of lovelyness) you get the point. then you pay the price. If you want a plastic body with screws showing and a clunky pop out CD rom and a tiny little trackpad (again you get the point) then you pay that price.
Almost like why would someone buy a Durango over a B44.
